Christoph Franke. An opportunity to rethink trees and our relationship with them, putting aside what we know about them.

This exhibition deals with our relationship to trees. It is an opportunity to rethink trees and to put aside what we know about them.

Oxygen surrounds us like water surrounds fish. With every breath we take, we are connected to the seemingly airless space that trees create for us as a habitable world.

I wanted to portray these natural beings intimately. I was first inspired by expressive branches and trunks, which remind me partly of human torsos and partly of trumpets sounding loudly from the ground. The trees seem so alive to me as if they were speaking a secret language. With the help of multiple exposures, I produced photographs directly on-site, which correspond to my perception of the subtle sounds of nature’s organisms.

Head On at 541 draws together 9 photographic artists.

Artists:Alberto Gandolfo, Bojana Jokanovic, Christoph Franke, Dave Tacon, Gabrielle Menezes, Kasper Forest, Katri Lassila, Noura Gauper, Victor Ramos Curator: Eleanor Megna

A self-taught photographer, Christoph started his own business in 1987 with a passion for working with people in various industries including music, cosmetics, recruitment, and marketing for international companies. Since 2009, Christoph deepened his photography practice with a philosophical approach. He is particularly interested in the principle of polarity. Opposites make the reality as we know it. It is with the help of these basic fundamentals — above and below, light and shadow or yin and yang — that we are able to perceive the material world. Christoph feels that photography is an excellent medium to shine a light on these concepts. Christoph lives and works in Germany.
