Alberto Gandolfo. A photographic research project inspired by stories of the recent past in Italy, including Mafia attacks, political assassinations

‘What Remains’ is a photographic research project started in January 2017, inspired by stories of the recent past in Italy, including Mafia attacks, political assassinations – focusing on the families and the people close to the victims of tragic episodes, all looking for truth. We know the stories in the news, we remember the faces of the people who tragically disappeared, but we know next to nothing about people who remain; people who, apart from experiencing a great deal of pain, inherit battles in search of truth and justice.

By revealing the faces of the people who remain, we contribute to keeping the attention on the evolution of particular and specific incidents, which bring anonymous and silent revolutions that end up affecting all of us. This selection of stories from the “What Remains” is told and represented through a portraits series and introduced by summary sheets that trace the main events that have occurred in recent years.

Among the protagonists of the stories we will find: Adele Chiello Tusa, the mother of young Giuseppe, who had been working for the Liguria Coast Guard for five years when he, along with nine other people died in the collapse of the Control Tower on the Giano Pier at the port of Genoa, which occurred after the cargo ship Jolly Nero crashed into it. A great lover of music, Giuseppe also carried out an activity as a DJ, under the pseudonym Giuppy Black; and Beppino Englaro, the father of Eluana Englaro who, following a car accident at the age of twenty-one, entered a coma which caused irreversible brain damage, leaving her in a persistent vegetative state for seventeen years.
