“Sand”: a series of images taken over a number of years expressing the timeless sculptured movement of a DuneScape as it slowly creeps across the low scrubland just inland of the Indian Ocean in Western Australia. Windswept. Sunny. Sometimes raining. Never dull. It reveals the dynamic movement and infinite permutations created by these elements. With these random forces it is not difficult to imagine how unchanged this place has been for thousands of years and why it has an almost spiritual evocation.
The 4wheel drive journey to this area always gave me a connection with the land and time, however ephemeral. Any footprints I left on previous occasions were long gone by the next visit: mere blips on the screen replaced by yet another variation on the theme. And, I was given the privilege of seeing it, perhaps first, before any other eyes but more amazingly the opportunity to capture it for all time and for all others to see as well.
I spent many occasions, sometimes camped nearby, walking barefoot across this scape engrossed and mesmerised by its ever changing shapes excitedly cresting peaks to find out what lay beyond. I was a boy again. The feelings it gave me then are immediately evoked now every time I sit quietly viewing and absorbing every ripple, every pattern, of every grain that each image gives me of ….sand.
