The venue for this exhibition sits on Gadigal land, and we acknowledge traditional owners, and elders past and present.
QUEERDOM is a collaborative exhibition by photographer-poet James Eades (Jamie James, photographer and Quinn Eades, poet), and the works presented are part of a book-length queertrans counter archive in progress of Sydney’s moments in queer time and place from the early nineties to now.
By rubbing photograph/image and poetry/text up against each other, these image-texts (which could also be fractals, holograms, or alephs) have a way of making heat and light; of drawing attention to the edges of queer life, where we play with the disorderly and disordering body; with what it means to carry our queertrans bodies through social and political spaces designed to not only not see us, but to not let us through the door in the first place.
Vitally, this collection of work is for LGBTIQA+ folk: this is our archive from below, these are our lives. Others may want to read/see these moments, but they are by and for us.
Jamie James. Freelance photographer. Finalist National Portrait Gallery Photographic Prize 2007 and 2015, finalist Australian Life Photographic prize 2018, semi finalist Moran Photographic prize 2014. In 2017 the State Library of NSW made a comprehensive acquisition of 170 images from James’s longitudinal body of First Nations social documentary work.
Quinn Eades is a Tracey Banivanua Mar Research Fellow at La Trobe University. A writer, researcher, gutter philosopher and poet, his book “Rallying” recently won the 2018 Mary Gilmore Award for best first book of poetry. He is madly in love with Jamie James.
