Italian documentary photographer Alessandro Penso presents a selection of images from Greece and Bulgaria, part of his long-term work on immigration in Europe and the Mediterranean.

In his images from Greece, he looks at the plight of young migrants and asylum seekers, many of whom are unaccompanied minors, who hope for a new life in Europe. Due to Greece’s high rate of refusal for asylum seeker applications, being detected by the Greek authorities would almost certainly mean the end of these young people’s European dream, so they hide, trying to avoid detection by the authorities and attempting to leave Greece illegally at the first possible opportunity, often in desperate ways and tolerating desperate conditions.

Neighbouring Bulgaria, a country also hit hard by the economic crisis, suddenly found itself in the middle of international migration flows like never before in 2013, due principally to the war in Syria. Caught completely unprepared for the thousands of refugees and asylum seekers it found within its borders within the space of just a few months, the Bulgarian Government would define this as the greatest humanitarian emergency the country had faced in the last 90 years.

In 2014, Alessandro’s work in Greece was the focus of a major exhibition in Europe entitled ‘The European Dream: Road to Bruxelles’ and he won the World Press Photo – General News Singles and a grant from the Magnum Foundation Emergency Fund Grant for his work in Bulgaria.
