As a foreigner who lived in Japan for a few years, I began to recognise that the culture is full of unspoken mannerisms. Often there are rules that guide you to do certain day to day things. On the surface it often seems like a complete random act, but once you delve deeper you learn to understand it is part of their way of doing things. It can seem chaotic, but once you understand what is going on, also zen-like.
