Skate Girl from the Series Skate Girls of Kabul
Jessica Fulford-Dobson

portrait
As women in Afghanistan of all ages face stringent restrictions on their movement and life choices, the remarkable NGO ‘Skateistan’ provides a means for unfettered freedom and joyful confidence building through skateboarding. An engaging way to bring girls back into the school system, Skateistan was founded by Australian skateboarder Oliver Percovich in 2007. This portrait reveals a strong, positive, counter-intuitive story about female identity in a challenging society. Skate culture comes to Kabul and girls rule!
