Ophelia
Cathy Carter
portrait
This portrait is inspired by painter John Everett Millais’ famous depiction of the drowned Ophelia. At the painting’s 1852 debut in London, critics were dismayed by Millais’ placement of Ophelia in a weedy ditch, feeling that it robbed the love-lorn maiden of all pathos and beauty. Carter’s Ophelia is a contemporary young male, semi submerged in a setting just as likely to have upset The Times – an alpine bog on Mt Ruapehu on the North Island of Aotearoa/New Zealand.
