Julie by Waded

As a close friend of almost 20 years Julie’s diagnosis of breast cancer came as a huge shock.

It all happened so suddenly – it was only weeks between Julie being diagnosed with breast cancer, a scheduled mastectomy and chemotherapy.

We decided we would document this moment. We did the shoot at Julie’s home which she shares with her partner – a space that allowed her to be completely herself.

For me this portrait is emotionally confronting yet shows my friend’s bravery amidst such uncertainty. Today, after chemotherapy and her decision to have a second mastectomy, Julie is once again healthy and we are in conversation about a follow up portrait.

Waded was a finalist in the Head On Portrait Prize 2011. The deadline for entering the Head On Portrait Prize 2012 is March 11.
