’Surface Deep’ is an installation of floating photographs that creates an ethereal and poignant exploration of the timeless beauty of our most precious resource: water. It poses the question, how do we relate to water and are we doing enough to look after our lakes, oceans and rivers? The health of our waterways and the complex ecology of fauna and flora is often overlooked in our need for recreational spaces and romantic vistas.
Percy has created a series of circular artworks that float on, or just below, the surface of shallow waters. What appears to be alluring submerged objects are in reality discarded rubbish. Fake flowers, tin cans, plastic, bottles have been transformed them into items of desire.
The exhibition is spread over two of Sydney’s most beautiful gardens, The Royal Botanical Gardens and the Paddington Reservoir Gardens.
Kim will be giving an artist talk at Paddington Reservoir Gardens at 11am on 6 May.
Kim Percy has been exhibiting since 1993 and has a MA in Media Arts, RMIT. Over the years she has built a name for herself as an artist who pushes the boundaries between art and design. She plays with the space between these disciplines and create works that reflect or explore social and climatic issues like water resources, population migration and the effects of weather on our collective psyche. Recently she has had a solo exhibition in New York City, was a finalist in 2016 Bowess Photographic Prize and a Reviewer for Ballarat Foto Biennale. She was also in the Core Program Daylesford (Ballarat) Foto Biennale 2007. Kim is Creative Director of Designscope and lives in Daylesford, Victoria. She also lecturers at Federation University.
