Zarni Kuniead Tun’s latest work, Street Romantics, documents the pockets of warmth, closeness and vulnerable humanity in the bustling streets of his home city, Sydney. The series began in earnest as a kind of personal therapy, helping the photographer find his feet and recover from burnout after his first solo show earlier in the year, Sabai. The photos in this series were taken during the cold autumn and winter months of 2023, predominantly using black and white film. Through this body of work, Zarni immortalises these unique moments, helping to rebuild his sense of self and his connections with those close to him.

Zarni Kuniead Tun

Zarni Kuniead Tun is a Thai-Burmese street photographer and beatmaker from Marrickville, Sydney. His work documents the everyday idiosyncrasies of his surroundings, showing appreciation for moments that resonate with his upbringing, family heritage, and connection with society.

His latest photo book, Sabai (2023), is based on his journey along the Mekong River in Southeast Asia. Throughout Thailand and Laos, Tun’s observational street photography explores and documents the landscapes, communities and lives displaced by infrastructure development.
