Dickerson Gallery presents ‘The Restless Waves’ with artists Meg Cowell and Kurt Sorensen, an Associated Exhibition of Head On Photo Festival 2015.
Both Cowell and Sorensen have unique perspectives when it comes to the dwarfing effects of the natural environment and its elements. Water is the central theme running through this show and it trickles into the cracks of human experience when faced with the mysteries of mortality. Sensuous photography depicts a somewhat romantic narrative in both artists imagery, yet the stories can be polarizing, depending on the viewer’s emotional engagement. The longer the work is considered, the deeper the level of understanding achieved.

Meg Cowell graduated with honours in photography from the University of Tasmania 2007 and has since gone on to exhibit nationally and abroad. Through a combination of costume-puppetry and studio based photography, Meg’s works evoke a rich display of sensual narrative and magical transformation. Her works reflect the personal nature of humanity when immersed in such a natural, enveloping element. Echoing the narrative of the physical environment is Kurt Sorensen, whose images reveal the precarious relationship that prevailed between the early European settlers and the harsh Australian landscapes; the hazardous nature reminding the ill-advised explorers about their naive feeling of superiority. Swallowed by the earth, those who disappeared in the landscape to never be found again are the protagonists of Sorensen’s imagery that lies at the edge of history and anthropology. Both artists present their personal perspectives on our relationship to the natural environment and our place in the world.
