During the height of the pandemic and running out of subjects to photograph in my studio, I was holding a sheet of simple white copy paper in the sun. Whilst moving and shaping the paper in the light, it was making the most surprising forms. It made me think of Plato’s ‘The Cave’ and question what really makes up our reality.
Born in 1985 in Racine, Wisconsin, USA, Kyle Hoffman lives and works in Sydney, Australia. His work is inspired by the natural world and fundamental hidden phenomena that shape our human experience. Fascinated by these mechanisms, the movements of deep time and how they influence our perceived reality, Hoffman’s work is then transformed by different cultural contexts and shaped by the viewer’s personal history and experience.
His work is created with a medium format film camera and hand-developed Bellows film.
