Chrystal’s practice explores the profoundly transformative reality of matrescence. Simultaneously speaking to, reproductive labour, its encroachment on domesticity and essential daily rituals. A documentary approach to the profound work that is child-rearing.
These images are part of a conversation on the honest experiences of motherhood. A poetic and intimate register that forms part of the visual literacy of our conception, fundamental to our civilisation as we know it.
This ongoing series of works explores the relationship between mother and child, the mother figure and how it has been hijacked, the fragility of life and our disconnection to it. The patriarchal institution of motherhood, maternal age, culture and the sexualisation of the feminine. This work is an agent of change, a commitment to the visual literacy of the maternal experience and a new way to define and revere the mother and child.
