Some of the poorest places in Mumbai offer up the biggest lessons in life. In the slums, the Dhobi Ghat and just around the streets, people are warm, engaging and welcoming. If you give the time, they give back a hundred fold. A gentle soul under a harsh exterior, the generosity of spirit that humbled me. People who have nothing, gave me more than anyone I have previously encountered.
I went with the intention of photographing the people who work, live, love in the poorer areas of Mumbai, I left with their resilience, happiness, ingenuity and friendship etched in my mind. This body of work is not intended to show poverty, to show sadness – its intention is to show their character, their spirit. This is the people of Dharavi, Dhobi Ghat and on the Mumbai streets.
