With a famously grey climate that inadvertently feeds the country’s passion for pubs and football terraces, when the summer finally arrives, ‘only Mad Dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun,’ or so the saying goes.

What would the locals get up to on the UK’s hottest-ever day on record, 22 July 2022? As temperatures soared throughout the country and transport networks (and just about everything else) broke down, the iconic pebbled beach of Brighton provided the perfect backdrop to find out…
