Fiona Ferguson’s childhood was filled with trips to galleries and conversations about art, forging a passion for colour and textures and the joy of visual juxtaposition. Cooking in her Mum’s kitchen similarly involved playful experimentation. When the artist began this project, she realised there were many parallels between the way they cooked and made art.
In this exhibition entitled Impromptu Smorgasbord, there is no food to be seen. In this case, the ‘dishes’ are the artworks and the recipes, just as in their cooking methodology, are unknown at the end of the process. A photographic layer here, a graphic detail there, a dash of colour, all the artistic equivalent of adding spices! Quantities unknown.
What you are served up is a bold, vibrant, sometimes opulent and hopefully uplifting ode to experimentation and creativity in the artist’s metaphorical kitchen.
Fiona Ferguson is an Australian photographer and digital artist living and working in Sydney. Densely layered, Fiona’s works playfully explore the intersection between nature and the artificial, incorporating graphic elements drawing from the colours within her photographs. She creates her unique and often abstract artworks using digital photographic collage techniques.
“I’m always trying to walk the line between serendipity and intention, searching for a visually poetic embodiment of emotive moments through colours and shapes”.
An emerging artist, Ferguson debuted her work at Sydney Contemporary in 2022. Participating again in the 2023 Contemporary, she also looks forward to her first exhibition as part of the Head On Photo Festival.
