The Head On Portrait Prize was established in 2004 to give both the public and photographers, both known and unknown, greater opportunity to view and exhibit high-quality photographic portraits. Today it is one of the biggest and most respected annual displays of portraiture in Australia, and the heart of the Head On Photo Festival.
Since the very first Head On Portrait Prize, neither the name of the photographer nor the status of the subject has played a part in the selection process. The judges look purely for images that encapsulate the personality of the sitter and invite an emotional response from the viewer.
The panel of judges changes each year and the works are anonymous at the time of selection, so the resulting final collection of works is unpredictable and diverse. This year’s judges were Michael Grecco, Alison Zavos, Editor-in-Chief Feature Shoot; Michael Reid (OMA), Director Michael Reid Gallery; and Moshe Rosenzveig, Head On Photo Festival Director.
