In 2022, Fiona set out to capture the changing face of Canberra’s industrial suburb, Fyshwick, and the women who work there.
Visitors to Fyshwick are mainly destination-driven; you go there when you need a couch or a car part, camping gear or cleaning supplies. After circling the streets with their industrial town names, eventually, you’ll find someone who will have (or tell you) just what you need, usually based on a vast experience of doing that very thing.
In this project, Fiona has turned that outcome-driven approach to the area on its head. She roamed there with an aesthetic rather than a practical purpose. She happened upon the working women of Fyshwick and was delighted with their company and willingness to share their stories.
Fiona Bowring is a Canberra-based photographer. She’s passionate about giving a voice to the stories shared with her through her photography.
In 2022, Fiona focused on recording the working lives of women in Canberra’s industrial area, in a series called Fyshwick Women Working. The National Library of Australia accepted 53 images from the series into its Picture Collection.
Fiona has been a finalist in several art prizes including; the National Photographic Portrait prize, the Martin Kantor Portrait Prize and the Head On Landscape Photo Awards.
