Old, raw, rusty, ugly and yet strangely beautiful. Industrial stairs, stairwells and fire escapes and their shadow play, pictured in ink black and white seem to look like they’re mathematical drawings. Just like the stairs of Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher. Famous for his impossible stairs and optical illusions, Escher used techniques like lithography and woodcuts to create his images. No matter how you flip them, you keep seeing endless steps, going up or down – Escher Stairs.
This exhibition is a side project, part of a larger ongoing industrial photo project named From A to Y. It captures the unseen beauty of the industrial harbour in Amsterdam; all they way up to Ymuiden, following the trail of the North Sea Canal.
These pictures were captured in and around Amsterdam’s current and historical industrial sites and harbour during an urban exploration. Besides Escher, the series was inspired by German photographer Robert Häusser. His black and white work captured the essence of everyday scenes, by using a sharp black and white contrast.
