The series Disastrous Co-incidence is a tribute to the survivors of child sexual abuse in religious and other institutions.
In 2019, Louise Milligan’s Walkley-awarded book, ‘Cardinal, the Rise and Fall of George Pell’, left me with a lasting impression of the survivors’ voices and the failure of the church to acknowledge them. I was appalled watching Pell give evidence at the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. His callous attitude towards the atrocities he and others failed to prevent.
I believe it is important to acknowledge survivors and keep these events alive in the public psyche. We need to end institutionalised abuse of vulnerable children and adults.
I am a Naarm-based photographic artist who studied photography at Melbourne Polytechnic and have exhibited across Australia and the United States. In 2017, I was awarded Victorian Emerging Photographer of the Year. My work focuses on our environment and how it shapes us, with my later work spotlighting story-telling, the mythology of place and how the body and the land can hold trauma.
