And Then, they were no longer invisible is a socially engaged photographic project that creates space for new narratives around aging, ageism and isolation.
The vision of this ongoing project is to use photo-storytelling and cultural preservation practices to develop social and creative connections and experiences with older people in diverse communities. Through this project, Muddle and Robinson honour older people. They work alongside communities, inviting people to participate in a range of unique co-creation opportunities that culminate in community-based large-scale public art exhibitions with supportive digital storytelling.
“Their lives span decades, traversing history, marked by seasons of love and loss, triumph and challenge. They might not know it yet, but their stories are a gift.”
Melanie Muddle and Hannah Robinson are photographic artists, socially engaged practitioners, listeners, storytellers, project developers, facilitators and founders of And Then.
And Then is a social-arts agency engaging in photography as a social practice. Muddle and Robinson invite communities to participate and connect, supporting them to tell their stories.
This authentic, collaborative practice – the foundation of their approach to work – shifts power dynamics, opens dialogue, fosters social change, and makes space for new forms of a collective voice.
Their practice encompasses a range of creative methodologies that facilitate the visual representation of lived experiences, culminating in bold, visual outcomes that engage communities.
