Kangaroo Island After the Fires
Climate Crisis, March, 2020: Between fire & pandemic I stand among the ashes of Kangaroo Island.
Only the burnt skeletons of mallee gums & shrub remain.
Yet among them vivid lime, lemon & pink leaf buds cling to the base of blackened trunks.
I arrange the blooms in vases – images of hope & renewal.
Over two long years of pandemic lock downs I paint the flora, highlighting colour, tone & texture.
The upside down images still rooted in the soil flip like op art under the beholder’s gaze, confusing the eye.
Shot raw on my DSLR camera. Hand pinted with acrylics & charcoal on cotton rag.
I shoot climate change. A Sydney-based artist, writer & photographer, I have been documenting over 10 years the impact of the climate crisis on Australia’s islands & coastal communities.
I have born witness to the oceans engulfing the Torres Strait on our northern frontier, camped in the threatened forests of Takayna, Tasmania & shacked up on the fire ravaged southern coast of Kangaroo Island..Beyond, I have journeyed north by river & by foot into the Indonesian rain forests of Sumatra & Kalimantan, Borneo to photograph the endangered orang-utan.
My images have featured on ABC News24, Good Weekend Magazine, SMH, HeadOn Photo Festival & the Walkleys slide night.
Exhibiting Fine Art Kangaroo Island & GalleryEast, Sydney.
With more then 40 years working in media & the arts, my work shifts between fine art, photojournalism, fantasy & documentary
