This series is an attempt to stop time and hold on to memories. The images look behind the individual faces, distort them, and save them from oblivion. At the same time, it is obvious that this is a losing battle. Nothing lasts. The faces are frozen in time; their stories stowed away. What remains is a search for the beauty of the transient, timeless and recognisable.
All pictures were taken on All Saints’ Day, between sunrise and sunset, at the largest garden cemetery in Ghent, Belgium. While more recent graves had scores of visitors, the residents of these older monumental tombs and vaults had none; their eyes turned only to me. Every person depicted has their own story, and they are telling part of it here.
