Stories of NSW, The NSW Arts Minister’s Award for Visual Storytelling, is a project to record contemporary life in NSW. The selected work will be exhibited at the State Library of NSW during Head On Photo Festival 2019.
With the decline of journalism generally and photojournalism, in particular, we have less access to meaningful images of contemporary life in Australia. This decline has an effect on our ability, now and in the future, to make sense of who we are and what makes our nation so unique.
The NSW Art Minister’s Award for Visual Storytelling will be awarded to a NSW artist to complete Stories of NSW, a photography project to record contemporary life in NSW. The project will culminate in an exhibition for Head On Photo Festival 2019.
The award is open to NSW artists with an idea or work in progress, which must fall under the category of fine art photography, photojournalism, or documentary photography telling the stories of NSW.
The grant recipient will receive $10,000 in cash and support to help them finalise the project. This award may be used by the artist in any way they wish to complete the project and the copyright in the images will be retained by the the artist.
The work will be exhibited at the SLNSW during Head On Photo Festival 2019 and the final 20 prints will become part of the State Library of NSW collection.
Head On in collaboration with the State Library of NSW will produce and mount the exhibition covering the cost of printing, mounting, exhibition space and promotion.
A team of industry professionals, photographers and curators, to be announced shortly, will review the submissions and in consultation with the Minister’s office will select the award recipient. The process of selection will be made without the artists’ names to ensure selection is done on merit alone.
