Reflecting on Hinengu #1, 2018
portrait
Reflecting on Hinengu #1, 2018 looks at creating a representation of the maori myth of Hinengu daughter of Tangaroa, god of the oceans whose form was a giant squid but who was also a shapeshifter. This photograph seeks to capture the moment after which Hinengu has transformed, from a starfish in a rockpool into a beautiful maiden. She did this to win the heart of a young man Rongomaipureora, son of Te Aomatarahi, a famous general of the Kahungunu Tribe in Waimarama. Tangaroa had forbidden Hinengu from consorting with humans and her powers were removed banning her, to the depths of the oceans as a giant squid.
