An Osage saying goes “when the last tree is cut down, the last fish eaten and the last stream poisoned, you will realize that you cannot eat money.” Jharia, a town in the Indian state of Jharkrand has been on fire for a century as a result of open cut mining. It closely resembles Dante’s Inferno – homes collapsing into the fires beneath, scavengers and plumes of lethal gas.
