Join us for the biggest night in Australian photography, the launch of the 13th annual Head On Photo Festival and the announcement of the Head On Photo Awards winners for 2022.
Saturday 5 November
11 AM – 12:30 PM (Sydney AEDT) Panel discussion – Anthropology through photography at the Bondi Pavilion in the Yalagang room and online.
Our kick-off panel for Head On Photo Festival 2022 discusses how we use photography as a tool to study humanity, in all its confounding forms.
12:35 PM – 1:35 PM (Sydney AEDT) Artist talks – Behind the Exhibition: part 1 at the Bondi Pavilion in the Yalagang room and online.
In the first of a four-part series, we invite Head On Photo Festival 2022’s featured artists to give an in-depth look at the stories and processes behind their exhibitions.
2:30 PM – 3:20 PM (Sydney AEDT) panel discussion – Beyond the lens at the Bondi Pavilion in the Yalagang room and online.
Photos can be created by many techniques – digital, film, screen print, and that’s just the beginning. Beyond the lens will look to the exhibitions that stray from traditional photographic methods, challenging the idea of what a photograph is.
3:30 PM – 4:45 PM (Sydney AEDT) panel discussion – Australia’s changing landscape at the Bondi Pavilion in the Yalagang room and online.
Four Australian artists from this year’s Head On Photo Festival 2022 Featured exhibitions discuss how they respond to the ever-changing Australian landscape through their photography.
5 PM – 6 PM (Sydney AEDT) film premiere – BLAZE at the Bondi Pavilion in the High tide room.
Murray Fredericks is launching a series of large-scale landscape photographs with fire as their central theme. The exhibition of the photographs will be accompanied by the film BLAZE, an observational documentary by Academy Award-nominate team Bentley Dean (director) and Tania Nehme (editor).
Sunday 6 November
10:30 AM – 12 PM (Sydney AEDT) panel discussion – Narratives of womanhood at the Bondi Pavilion in the High Tide room and online.
A vibrant thread throughout the various photography exhibitions featured in this year’s Festival was an exploration of motherhood and the often-conflicting experiences of womanhood. This panels explores diverse narratives of what it means to be a woman and how several women artists have delved into their gendered existence through their unique photographic styles.
12:10 PM – 1:30 PM (Sydney AEDT) panel discussion – Insiders & outsiders at the Bondi Pavilion in the High Tide room and online.
Insiders & outsiders, a panel discussing access, internal vs. external perspectives, and the future of photojournalism.
2:30 PM – 4 PM (Sydney AEDT) panel discussion – Meet the finalists at the Bondi Pavilion in the High Tide room.
What makes an image stand out? Join judges and selectors who blind judged this year’s Head On Photo awards as they share what about the finalist’s photographs are significant to them. Hear from the 2022 award-winning photographers speak about their work.
6 PM – 8 PM (Sydney AEDT) panel discussion – Stories that Sir: self-reflection at the Bondi Pavilion in the High Tide room.
Self discovery and reflection take on many forms. Art is one way to reflect and four of our featured artists come together to tell us how they used photography to document and reflect on their lives – in the good times and the bad. Led by Monica Rosenfeld – public speaker, comedian, and PR extraordinaire. Monica joins Ramak Bamzar, Garrie Maguire, and Rachel Portesi as they discuss the stories that defined their lives and their photography.
