This work was begun in response to last year’s Australian National Preventive Health call for a volumetric tax to be imposed on wine as part of a drive to wipe out cheap wine that is blamed for alcohol fuelled violence and problems estimated to cost the community $15 billion a year. It is focused on the complex impact proposed taxation increases, which are based on social policy objectives, would have on the environment, community and industry in the Mildura Murray Darling region which is among the largest wine regions in Australia with each of the wineries in this series producing in excess of 75,000 cases annually.
