Many people know the Blue Mountains as a place of extraordinary natural beauty, deserving of the World Heritage status it holds. For many residents however, the image of a man-made landscape is superimposed on the surrounding wilderness. Road works have been in progress on the highway that links the mountain villages for twenty years. Mighty earthworks, wrapped landscapes in18 percent grey, composed in thirds, like giant flags or conceptual sculptures and endlessly in progress, are my constant visual reference as I drive up and down the highway.
