In the middle of the lake in Maluga Passive Park, this tree with its gnarled exposed roots can be found. Captured in Birrong in Sydney’s south west, scenes such as these show natural habitats meeting suburban streets. The aim of this series, ‘On the Periphery’, is to capture natural environments in Sydney’s West, and to evoke a visceral experience, as the places themselves do. These landscapes are not remote, but are within our reach in our day to day lives, and play an important role in fostering our connection to nature. ‘On the Periphery’ also reminds of the boundaries prevalent in our urbanised culture – the divisions between the self, our natural environment and the world to which we belong.
