As I sit in my beach cabana and watch the turquoise blues of the Indian Ocean transforming into the hues of an African sunset I feel the magic of Zanzibar at work. The annual monsoons once forced the traders of Arabia, Africa and India to spend long periods of time here, resulting in a melting pot of cultures called the Zanzibari mix.

It is no wonder then the people here seem strangely removed from the mainland and the place itself follows the rhythms of the ocean rather than of Africa.

I find myself settling into the peace of an island lifestyle, indulging in the luxury of doing nothing, as the sound of the ocean lulls me to sleep.
