Stung Meanchey is a rubbish dump on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, Cambodia covering 40 hectares. It looks and smells like you have arrived at the end of the world. Blood filled hypodermic syringes lie alongside rotting food and maggots. The foggy haze is the result of burning rubbish to prevent diseases such as cholera from spreading – but the consequence of burning plastics is lung disease for the workers and residents at Stung Meanchey, due to the dioxins released into the atmosphere. Despite these circumstances the people of Stung Meanchey were profoundly kind and welcoming.
