Tips, recycling centres and landfills are the unseen machinery of our consumer culture, the discarded products the aftermath of our pleasure. These places of residue lay on the edge of cities, neither seen nor sought out, yet we are responsible for them. These non-places are alien, disturbing, intriguing and even beautiful.
I have set the mountain of waste in the Australian landscape and by inverting the images the sky turns orange creating an ‘apocalyptic’ scene. Just like an x-ray the negative format exposes our wastefulness as being a disease, whilst printing on metallic paper used in high-end advertising underscores the link between consumerism and waste.
