David Nielsen’s Scratches on the Surface: Ipswich from Above examines Ipswich’s mining regions from a hot air balloon, allowing us to view the natural and altered landscape.
Shooting from the zenith, a floating point directly above the earth’s surface and aiming downwards towards the pull of gravity.
Examining the influence mining has on shaping the land; Nielsen’s work explores that interaction with the landscape. Depending on one’s perspective Nielsen’s work could be viewed as a celebration of the beauty created by our presence; or as a critique of the intrinsically destructive nature of the mining machine.
