This image is a personal metaphor reflecting in the landscape an inner transformation that was about to occur in my life. In the years since I took this photograph deeper meanings have become clearer, the Kata Tjuta landscape symbolised a beginning that was to take place on a personal journey. A journey that I had no premonition of at the time, a series of events that brought a long term relationship to an end, an extended period overseas and adventures that I couldn’t have imagined.
Arriving to a designated dawn viewing location I found myself surrounded by fellow visitors to this beautiful and spiritual country. Using an old Maymiya C33 I had bought before the trip I took a few photos in the predawn light, however I had a deep inkling that there was another possible photograph on the but I had to move quickly as the sun was beginning to rise. Driving to the western side of Kata Tjuta I was alone, and the distinctive shapes of the rock were in silhouette. I stopped the car as close as I dared and with my last roll on my old Minolta medium format camera I proceeded to take photos as I walked closer. With seconds to go and just before the sun began to break over the horizon I took my last photo on the roll.
