One of South Africa’s UNESCO World Heritage sites, the Drakensberg ranges are its highest mountains with peaks reaching well over 3000m. This is a captivating area with untouched wilderness, basalt caves and incredible biodiversity and views that take my breath away.
It was the challenge of trekking through these mountains and a desire to see the sunrise that brought me here in the early hours of the morning. Despite pushing ourselves to our limits against gale force winds, we did not reach our goal of climbing Mount Sentinel.
That day I learnt that not all mountains are meant to be climbed, not all goals are meant to be reached. Sometimes instead we should allow ourselves to be guided to a more beautiful destination, an unexpected wonder.
