Yoku Wakaranai / I don’t really understand

In this series I have explored the feeling, common to many visitors and foreign residents in Japan, of not quite understanding the Japanese people. Having lived in Japan and visited many times, I still sometimes find myself feeling an outsider in social and cultural situations , not understanding peoples’ feelings and motivations.
In these images I have tried to communicate that feeling of observing but not really understanding.
I am a photographer working mainly with film and digital. In the past my overwhelming passion has been “street” work along the lines of Winogrand and Moriyama . As my technique has matured I now find myself more interested in composed portraits and shots of humans or human influence in the larger landscape .
My intense interest in the study and implementation of photography began when I was selected to participate in a Magnum Masterclass under Jacob Sobol in Tokyo in 2015. Since 2015 I have shown my work in group exhibitions in Tokyo and Rome.
