West End 4101

West End 4101 is a photographic portrait project based on the people of inner city Brisbane suburb, West End. The inspiration and subjects for the project are the local folk who live and work in West End, and who contribute to the suburb being the unique one that it is.
West End is a suburb with a genuine sense of community that prides itself on its diversity.
However, as with so many suburbs that occupy space close to the heart of the world’s larger cities, the traditional community is facing change. Indeed they are are finding that due to development and gentrification, they are being forced to compete for space with an entirely new demographic.
I have watched for a number of years the gradual change taking place in West End and began to feel that in the future, the suburb may change to the point that today’s West End may not be so recognisable. So I felt that now was a good time to document who lives here.
The first 50 or so portraits were taken in a building that was earmarked for demolition to make way for an upmarket multi-story apartment block. That building has now been demolished to make way for that development.
The project is an open ended one as my only limitation will be to run out of subjects willing to sit for me. If you would like to see more of my work, please click here
