For four years, I was a seafaring hotel crew member on luxury cruises. Uniform, badge, appropriate smile, sheathed attitude, chignon, and heels at the Captain’s party: I was part of the well-oiled ballet of crew members. With the others, I played out this theatrical life for the tourist industry. I experienced it up close and personal, fascinated to the point of nausea.

Welcome on board is an ambivalent, two-headed play, somewhere between the absurd and the sublime. On stage: Antarctica, the ultimate cruise destination. Isolated for millions of years, the vast frozen continent, remote and impenetrable, was one of the planet’s last sanctuaries. Once known only to explorers and scientists, this territory has become a commodity, a destination of choice for wealthy tourists, thirsty for novelty and eager to discover regions threatened with extinction. Behind the scenes, the staging becomes plasterboard, with its costumes, codes, and gestures. All the beauty and tragedy of our world savoured between two glasses of champagne…

Lorraine Turci explores the intricate relationships between humans and their environment, delving into territory, identity, and memory through her documentary and humanist writing. Her sensitive narratives highlight the richness of diverse identities as acts of resistance, revealing the complex beauty of the world.

A Beaux-Arts de Nantes and Université Paris 8 graduate, Lorraine has been a freelance photographer since 2019 and received notable commissions and support from various cultural institutions. She has participated in artistic residencies in Japan, Arles, and Greenland, with an upcoming residency in Gambia. Her work has been exhibited in France and internationally.
