The Upper Reaches

THE UPPER REACHES – Blue Mountains street photography.
The Blue Mountains is a place of mist, myth and mystery. Sydney’s wilderness playground and a home to a community literally living on the edge.
After a decade in the rarified atmosphere of Upper Mountains, photographer David Brazil has taken to the streets of his community to delve below the picture postcard views of endless mountain vistas and quaint villages and garden festivals.
The work is the photographer’s personal response to the people and places he engages with every day. Captured over a three month period the work is at times sombre, sensitive, provocative and beautiful.
David deliberately chose to work within the constraints and deceptive simplicity of iPhone photography to capture and process each image in one “decisive moment”. This technique has given the work a spontaneity and candid feel while still addressing universal themes.
With an $80,000 prize pool, it represents a global selection of the best work from emerging and established photographers.
The Head On Photo Festival 2025 is back this November, transforming Sydney into a photography haven with major exhibitions
