Underexposed is a participatory photography project that aims to promote positive images and voices of resilient, proud Indigenous women in the lead up to the proposed referendum on Constitutional Recognition of Indigenous Australians. In association with the Head On Photo Festival, the project is being delivered by Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation NSW (ANTaR NSW) in partnership with the Ngala Nanga Mai pARenT Group Program.
Through activity funding provided by Recognise, Underexposed has engaged mothers of Aboriginal children from the Randwick, Southern Sydney and La Perouse regions in a 9 week project. The project seeks to encourage and celebrate a visual mode of storytelling from women whose voices are usually silenced or pushed to the margins. Their perspectives and narratives are told through photographic and textual means. The project has supported local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women to capture everyday images of Indigenous women from their homes, work, environments and communities including their grandmothers, mothers, aunties, sisters, nieces and daughters to encourage a dialogue amongst women from all cultural backgrounds for the need for equality in Australia’s Constitution. The images produced explore themes relating to respect, dignity, rights, racism, pride, inclusion, equality, and identity as part of a broader campaign on Constitutional recognition.
