Melbourne-based photographer, Andrew Babarczy, celebrates individuality and empathy in his ongoing Street Portraits project. The subjects for this eclectic series, taken between 2010-2014, are strangers he met literally minutes before taking their photo. “The whole interaction normally lasts only a minute or two,” he says “and this often results in an unguarded honesty.” Shot predominantly on the streets of Melbourne using digital and film cameras, Babarczy’s egalitarian approach encourages a sharing of the creative process between photographer and subject.
Andrew Babarczy has worked as a freelance photographer in the areas of portraiture and fashion since 2008. His commercial work has been commissioned by Australian editorial publications Rolling Stone, Good Weekend, Sunday Life and Grazia among others. His artistic practice has seen him named as finalists in both The National Photographic Portrait Prize 2009 and the Bowness Photography Prize 2013. Street Portraits is Andrew’s first solo exhibition.
