A Sobered Communist is Callum Royle’s exploration into the psychological scars caused by the enforced systematisation and increase in surveillance in Romania. It was inspired by Paul Neuberg’s The Hero’s Children: the Post-War Generation in Eastern Europe. With the 30th anniversary since the fall of communism approaching, Neuberg said “it is fair to suggest the system’s flawed nature still remains to have a psychological effect on the proletariat”.
