Heterogeneous: adjective 1. different in kind; unlike; incongruous.

Photo-journalist Ilana Rose has been capturing images of subcultures for over 20 years. Her recent collection of works Heterogeneous continues this exploration, documenting those who are under-represented in mainstream society.

Intimate and revealing, these environmental portraits celebrate the diversity, creativity and wit of exotic individuals. Those who have decided to forsake the conventional in favour of self-expression – whose unique identities are gloriously articulated through dress and bodily adornment

Heterogeneous is a sequel to earlier works by Ilana collected by The Powerhouse Museum. Her works have been widely exhibited, as well as being held in permanent collections at The Powerhouse Museum, The Latrobe Picture Collection-The State Library of Victoria and in The City of Melbourne’s Art Collection. They have also appeared in publications such as The Age, The Australian, The Sydney Morning Herald, HQ Magazine and Rolling Stone.
