Photography has always played an essential role in the queer community. It is a means of being visible – visibly queer, visibly gay, visibly true.

Head On Foundation’s Queertography, looks back through the Head On archives, and adding new content, brings to light photography and photographers who have pioneered queer representation.

The diverse images you will experience explore LGBTQIA+ experiences and perspectives caught on camera. Each series act as a profound visual testament to the queer community and how they live, survive, thrive, challenge, love and explore.

Queertography is presented as part of Head On Photo Festival 2024 and features the work of Australian and internationally renowned photographers (A-Z by first name):

You can also read interviews with the following photographers:

Lead Curator, Head On Photo Festival, Moshe Rosenzveig OAM
Curator, Perth, Claire Martin
Assistant Curators, Head On Photo Festival, Anita Schwartz, Stephen Godfrey

Queertography is a Head On Foundation production that premiered in Sydney as part of World Pride 2023 and featured in Sydney Mardi Gras 2024. World Pride 2023 at Belvoir street gallery.

Head On Photo Festival
The fifteenth annual Head On Festival 2024 offers a diverse and compelling program of free exhibitions, discussions and social events framed by the evocative visual narratives presented.

This year we received an incredible 4000+ applications from 58 countries telling powerful stories about community, conflict, the environment, and more. Stories that connect with our audience, sparking feelings of empathy, awe, and inspiration.

We chose 90+ exhibitions and 600+ artists to showcase across Sydney, Australia and online. We are committed to sharing diverse ideas and, through our global connections, building Australia’s reputation as an international cultural powerhouse, broadening Australia’s talent base.

As one of Australia’s few remaining photography organisations, our work in storytelling and curation is more important than ever, especially in illuminating the perspectives, styles, and forms that break new ground.
