This series was taken in the Quartier Saint-Antoine, a poor yet eclectic district of Aubenas in southern France. It shows the faces of the inhabitants in both conventional housing and the squats surprisingly situated in the city centre. These characters range from a bohemian tramp to a former musician from the ocean liner SS France. Above all, this series of encounters has helped photographer Hubert Barre understand his neighbourhood more intimately.
Hubert Barre’s vibrant and varied photographic career started in 1985 when he served in the French army press service and investigated the Berlin Wall. Since then, his practice has shifted and evolved to lyrically capture the people and places that interest him: “moments of life” in the street and the home. He has exhibited in both solo and group shows around the globe and has been awarded a wide array of prestigious awards and acknowledgements in France and Switzerland.
Australia's world-leading photography festival once again filters photography down to its finest. The great thing is that Head On's main venues at Bondi and Paddington are just a bus ride away.
