As children, our fears are often easy to name or recognise. We are afraid of monsters, ghosts, or the shadows behind the curtains. As we get older, our fears often become more abstract. ‘New Ghosts’ is a collaborative project, where my daughter, Astrid, and I reenact our fears and nightmares in photographs. Through the cathartic process of addressing our fears, my daughter and I tame these faceless figments of our imagination. They are no longer our enemies, but our servants who are ready to support us and make us feel stronger. Together, we splash light into the darkness and get to know the unknown. After showing Astrid the photographs of our monsters, he didn’t find them scary anymore. On the contrary, she saw the creature as a new friend who would comfort and protect her. This collaborative project has encouraged us to spend more time with one another. ‘New Ghosts’ provides us with a space to share our thoughts, fears, and dreams and expands upon the traditional relationship between my role as a father and her identity as a child.
