Amid COVID-19, Johannes Bosgra saw a million starlings flitting rhythmically across a deep blue sky at a nature reserve close to his home in the Netherlands. The birds were silhouetted like tiny black specks in musical motion, flying in intricately coordinated patterns, forming abstract landscapes in the sky.
Utterly mesmerised by the unfolding choreography, Bosgra did not seek to merely document the behaviour of the swarms but to render their ballet in his own minimalist style.
Pointing his camera directly upward, Bosgra isolated the swarm from the ground and used the sky as a canvas. “When I see a landscape,” he says, “I hear music in my head and vice versa; they flow into each other.”
Dutch photographer and pianist Johannes Bosgra integrates his love for art and music into multimedia compositions, working with composers and musicians like Philip Glass and Feico Deutekom to create a Gesamtkuntswerke (all-embracing artform).
Bosgra’s works have been published, performed and exhibited widely throughout Europe and beyond. With his latest series Murmurations, he has received international recognition with exhibitions at Shanghai Center of Photography, Rotterdam Photo, Singapore Photography Festival, Prix de la Photographie Paris, Moscow Photo Center and San Francisco Bay Month of Photography, among others.
