Mirrors and windows is a group show curated by Len Metcalf and Herb Ascherman, comprising works from the Cleveland Photo Festival and students of Len’s School. It is inspired by John Szarkowski’s concept that photographs fall somewhere on the continuum “from public to private concerns” or ‘mirrors and windows’.

While he developed this concept from Minor White’s idea that all photographs are self-portraits, Szarkowski could see that many photographers were trying to document and record the world for what they believed it was.

We believe we can shed light on contemporary photographic practice by revisiting the concepts proposed by Szarkowski and explored in that seminal exhibition.

Herbert Ascherman Jr. has been creating fine art and professional portraiture for over 40 years, specialising in black-and-white and the resurgent art of platinum photography.

Internationally recognised for his photographs of people in creative, commercial, and social settings, Herb’s work has been exhibited and commercially published throughout the US, Europe, Japan and India.

Len Metcalf has been exploring photography, fine art and art education for the past 40 years specialising in monochrome photography.

Internationally recognised for his unique works of art, he has devoted most of his energies to developing creative photographic practice in others. His school leads others in offering unique learning opportunities in a growing movement toward individual expression.
